Fiction Guidelines (Please Read Carefully)

Tikkun is seeking short fiction. All forms and styles are acceptable, though we especially like stories that deal with the spiritual, progressive, regenerative, and transformative elements of life. We’re also highly drawn to works about religion, Israel/Palestine, the Mideast conflicts, and social justice. Please keep in mind that ours is a global, multi-faith readership, and while we appreciate non-English expressions, nu, the language needs to be broadly accessible.

In the past, we’ve published stories by widely acclaimed authors like Joyce Carol Oates, Grace Paley, Marge Piercy, Francine Prose, Leonard Michaels, Rebecca Goldstein, Thane Rosenbaum, Steve Stern, and Leslie Epstein. Yet we also cherish new voices and actively seek them out.

While we have no set lengths for pieces, works over 5000 words will have to be especially impressive to warrant publication. Novel excerpts are fine provided that they can stand alone. As a nonprofit publication we are unable to offer monetary compensation to authors, but we express our gratitude through complimentary copies and subscriptions. We also welcome and encourage simultaneous submissions provided we’re notified in the cover letter and informed immediately if the work is accepted elsewhere.

To withdraw a piece, please use the Submittable system. We do not accept previously published work, and we require that all submissions be made through our online system. Please submit only one story at a time and no more than twice per year. Because we have a small staff and receive many submissions, we regret that we cannot respond to every piece. If you do not hear from us within four months of submitting, it’s safe to assume that we have passed on the piece.
